Ethiopia: patent examination

In Ethiopia, patents are protected under the Industrial Property (Inventions, Minor Inventions and Industrial Designs) Law No. 123-1995 (“the Law”).

The Ethiopian Industrial Property Office has recently announced that all national patent applications will now be examined in accordance with Article 13(3) of the Law.

Whilst it remains unclear how this will be implemented in practice (whether by the EIPO itself, or by an approved examining authority), it will now be necessary to pay the corresponding fees. No specific deadline has been stipulated at this stage, but we recommend that the Examination fees are paid as soon as possible.
