Ethiopia: patent examination

In Ethiopia, patents are protected under the Industrial Property (Inventions, Minor Inventions and Industrial Designs) Law No. 123-1995. We have received reports that the Ethiopian IP Office (EIPO) will no longer conduct substantive examination for patents until such time as the Search and Examination fee has been paid - apparently there have been instances where examination has taken place but the fee has not been paid.

At this stage it is not clear whether there will be any time limit for the payment of the fee. We do, however, understand that EIPO will examine as soon as the fee is paid.

We will monitor this matter carefully and will report on any developments.
