The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has announced that Jamaica has joined the Madrid Protocol – the Caribbean island state deposited its instrument of accession on 27 December 2021, which means that the Protocol will enter into force on 27 March 2022.

The effect of this is that brand owners will, as of 27 March 2022, be able to protect their trade marks in Jamaica by way of an International Registration.

Jamaica has opted for the 18-month period for notification of refusals, or longer in the case of a third-party opposition.

The Jamaican authorities have announced that individual fees will be charged.
