The Ugandan IP authority, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, has given notice that 4095 expired trade mark registrations will be struck off if they are not renewed on or before 23 June 2021 – this is according to an advertisement that appeared in the government publication, New Vision, on 25 May 2021. Some of these registrations expired as far back as 2005.
In Uganda, the initial trade mark registration term is seven years, followed by renewal terms of 10 years. Trade mark owners who have allowed Ugandan trade mark registrations to lapse may wish to avail themselves of this opportunity. Trade mark owners who are unsure about whether any of their registrations may be affected by this development can, of course, contact us.
