To mark World Anti-Counterfeiting Month, we’re proud to share our involvement in a bold anti-counterfeiting and sustainability initiative, that redefines how seized counterfeit goods are destroyed, turning a liability into an opportunity for environmental and social impact.
This important initiative has been made possible through the leadership and funding of React, a global anti-counterfeiting network with over 30 years of experience. Representing 350 businesses and around 280 rights owners worldwide, React works across all industry sectors to combat the illegal trade in counterfeit goods. The vision and support of React members have been instrumental in launching this project in South Africa.

At the operational core of the initiative is Allied Storage, home to the country’s largest and most advanced counterfeit goods destruction facility, located in Clayville, Gauteng. Handling over 70% of South Africa’s counterfeit stock, Allied is setting a new benchmark for secure destruction, sustainable waste management, and inclusive job creation.
Together, React and Allied Storage are pioneering a model that balances enforcement with environmental responsibility and social development – setting an example not just for South Africa, but for the world.
A Model of Responsible Destruction and Innovation
The fight against counterfeiting extends beyond enforcement. It’s about ensuring that spurious goods do not re-enter the market and that their disposal does not harm the planet. At Allied Storage, counterfeit items, ranging from fast fashion to electronics, are recycled or upcycled wherever possible.
Key highlights of this initiative include:
- Secure storage and destruction of counterfeit goods
- Innovative recycling methods that reduce environmental impact
- Employment opportunities for previously disadvantaged and disabled individuals
- A strong focus on zero-to-landfill practices, supporting South Africa’s circular economy goals
Global Relevance
This initiative is a compelling example of how intellectual property protection, environmental responsibility, and socioeconomic development can intersect. It showcases a scalable model for markets worldwide grappling with similar challenges posed by the seizure of counterfeit goods.
For clients, partners, and stakeholders in the IP, legal, manufacturing, and sustainability sectors, South Africa’s approach offers practical insights and potential areas for international collaboration. As the world continues to combat the growing threat of counterfeiting, efforts like these reaffirm the importance of integrating enforcement with innovation, inclusion, and sustainability.
