Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body – Joseph Addison
The children of Dr IM Monare Primary School in Mamelodi gathered with giggles and laughter on their school porch for the opening of the reading room on 4 October 2013. This prestigious occasion was attended by staff members, parents, sponsors and members of the community. Leti Kleyn the brain child of this wonderful initiative was the MC on the day and shared her vision to empower young children with the power of reading.
The guest speaker was South African renowned poet Oswald Mbuyiseni Mtshali who delivered words of wisdom about the importance of reading and sang one of his poems for the guests and children to sing along to. The headmasters address highlighted how much the reading room meant to the school and that the children have been looking forward to reading.
Spoor & Fisher who had the pleasure of donating the books for the reading room was represented by Juli Hopf and Hlogi Kgothadi. The University of Pretoria students, who had taken their time on weekends to read to the pupils of Dr IM Monare Primary School, were present to witness the joy of the children as there is now a reading room facility to better help the pupils. The most astonishing moment came when the visiting headmasters of the different neighbouring schools were in awe and wanted to see the same reading room initiative take place at their schools.
The reading room will create a place where the children’s dreams and thoughts can become a reality and enlighten them that reading is a key to unlock the limitless knowledge the world has to offer. We take for granted the privileged opportunity of having access to books to read, and sadly with many of our schools a reading room or library is uncommon. It is our responsibility to ensure that our children are equipped with reading skills because the pupils of Dr IM Monare Primary School are the future leaders of our rainbow nation.
