On 27 May 2025, Mauritius deposited its Instrument of Accession to the Harare Protocol on Patents, Utility Models and Industrial Designs with the ARIPO Director General (Mr Bemanya Twebaze). Mauritius will be the 21st ARIPO Member State to be party to the Harare Protocol.
From a practical point of view, this means that Mauritius may be designated in an ARIPO patent, a utility model, and an industrial design application from 27 August 2025. As far as international PCT patent applications are concerned, it will be possible to designate Mauritius under an ARIPO regional phase patent application for PCT applications with an international filing date on or after 27 August 2025.
Following on from the news in 2023 that Mauritius had joined the PCT, this is another important development, reflecting the country’s commitment to the protection of intellectual property as well as simplifying the process for applicants.
